By Sanita Dhillon, Communications Assistant – Wood’s Homes
Did you know? Only 1 in 5 children who need mental health services will receive treatment.
As a nationally recognized non-profit children’s mental health centre, Wood’s Homes helps 20,000 vulnerable children and their families from across Canada each year. We provide 35 programs and services throughout Alberta and NWT.
In recognition of National Children’s Mental Health Day on May 7, Wood’s Homes is once again raising awareness of our services to help reduce stigma and encourage early intervention.
Help us support children’s mental health. This is how you can show your support on May 7:
1. Join our March for Mental Health at noon on Stephen Avenue to help us spread awareness!
In many cities across this country, activities are held throughout National Mental Health Week (May 4-10) to highlight children’s mental health issues, community services, research and hope for a brighter future. Wood’s Homes proudly organizes an awareness event in Calgary each year.
This year, we are excited to lead a colourful MARCH FOR MENTAL HEALTH on May 7 from noon to 1 p.m. on Stephen Avenue from 3rd Street SW to Olympic Plaza. We will be carrying signs about our services and bringing lots of positive energy!
We will also have a booth set up on Stephen Ave (across from Flames Central) to hand out information and giveaways. At Olympic plaza, we will serve free Starbucks coffee and cupcakes from Crave Cupcakes and Cookies!
We’re thrilled to announce the participation of: Vermilion Energy Inc, Sinopec Canada, Canadian Oil Sands, BMO, RBC, TD, WestJet, Ply Gem, CBC (Do-Crew), The Canadian Mental Health Association and Calgary Stampeders’ Jon Cornish!
We invite you to join us and bring your children, friends, family and colleagues to help us to recognize this special day and the important work of our organization.
2. If you or someone you know needs help, call our 24/7 counselling line: 1-800-563-6106.
Crisis and conflict are normal processes that everyone experiences at some point in their life. Whatever the situation or problem – large or small – we are here to listen and help. The Wood’s Homes Community Resource Team provides 24/7 help via telephone, mobile crisis response, text and LiveChat. The Eastside Family Centre provides free and confidential walk-in counselling in northeast Calgary at Northgate Mall, open Monday to Saturday.
3. Share the parenting tips on our blog.
Wood’s Homes has a wealth of knowledge to share with parents and caregivers.
As a leader in our field, our Research Department builds the knowledge necessary to improve mental health treatment outcomes for children, youth and families, and integrates this knowledge with practice. It contributes to the larger service community by sharing success.
In 2014, Wood’s Homes and the University of Calgary partnered to establish the Wood’s Homes Research Chair in Children’s Mental Health to enhance mental health treatment services in the community.
Last year, our team of experts launched our first series of free parenting workshops – open to all parents and caregivers. Based on the practical parenting tips that we shared, we created video clips for parents. Feel free to share them with your friends and family along with the parenting tips section of our blog.
