Janet Stewart – Program Manager, Wood’s Homes
“Walk right in, sit right down
Client, let your mind roll on
Walk right in, sit right down
Client, let your mind roll on”
The staff at the Eastside Family Centre, a walk-in counselling centre located in northeast Calgary, is often reminded of the lyrics of the song ‘Walk Right In’, first recorded in 1929 and made popular by The Rooftop Singers in 1962.
At EFC we have adapted the lyrics slightly to fit our experiences.
Eastside Family Centre of Wood’s Homes will be celebrating its 25 year anniversary this year and will be hosting the 2nd International Single Session Therapy and Walk-In Services in Banff September 28-30.
Walk-in counselling services are growing rapidly across the country. Alberta boasts walk-in services in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Red Deer, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, High Level, Peace River and Grande Cache.
Ontario’s walk-in counselling services have also grown by leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Conversations with other professionals about how to start walk-in services in their areas of the country including the Maritimes, the northern territories, Manitoba and British Colombia happen with EFC staff weekly.
Canadians are requesting immediate, low-cost and effective mental health services. As part of the continuum of community services, walk-in counselling is a service delivery model that meets the mental health needs of families, couples and individuals in our communities.
Two notable books on the current state of single session therapy and walk-in services are:
‘Capturing the Moment: Single session therapy and walk-in services’ by editors Michael Hoyt and Moshe Talmon
‘When One Hour Is All You Have: Effective therapy for walk-in clients’ by editors Arnie Slive and Monte Bobele.
