A ride for safety, remembrance and community

By Cynthia Hyde, Motorcycle Awareness Ride Committee Secretary

Sunday, May 15 was an absolutely amazing day! Hundreds of bikes converged at the Grey Eagle Casino parking lot in support of Wood’s Homes Stepping Stones Program in Fort McMurray and the Memorial Ride for Bob Kane, Walt Healy and Roger Hyde.

All riders were welcome to muster at their favorite shop or dealership to join that group on their pre-ride prior to arriving at Grey Eagle. I mustered at Kane’s along with 130 other riders.

Roger Hyde was my late husband and to see so many familiar faces mustering at Kane’s in support of my family was truly heart-warming! Roger worked diligently to promote Rider Safety throughout his 55 years of riding. He strongly believed that each year, at the beginning of riding season, it was absolutely vital to spread the word that “bikes are back on the road”. The C-US logo helps to bring that awareness to the forefront of the public at large.

The Calgary City Police provided a seamless and safe motorcycle escort from Grey Eagle to Ranchman’s, where participants enjoyed a well-prepared meal, and were able to bid on a host of silent and live auction items. The band played a lively assortment of music for all to enjoy. It was a day of fellowship with likeminded motorcyclists, remembrance of three Calgary and area motorcycle pioneers, and support for Stepping Stones, Wood’s Homes program for Youth in Fort McMurray.

I was thrilled to be part of the day’s events in support of Wood’s Homes – their staff and volunteers have made an ongoing commitment to assist with the organization and planning of the Awareness Ride, and be onsite throughout the day as the event unfolds. The Organizing Board looks forward to working closely with Wood’s for next year’s Ride, and I will happily give time and energy to this worthy cause.

Well done!
