It’s not work if you love what you do

There are several things that contribute to why I love working at Wood’s Homes as much as I do; the much-needed mental health services we offer, the impact we have on our clients’ lives, the opportunity to wear many creative hats and the incredible stories I get to hear every day. However, I would have to say it’s the people and culture at Wood’s that make me love my job the most.

Here are a few reasons why:

1. Our staff and volunteers

The people at Wood’s Homes are amazing. There’s no other way to put it. I’m lucky to work with some of the most talented, dedicated, fun and empathetic people I’ve ever met here. And not only are they supportive and hardworking, they like to have fun too!

In addition to my coworkers, there’s another group of individuals who equally inspire me – our volunteers. They serve in many different disciplines, and graciously donate their skills and expertise to help us serve our clients. Never before have I seen the same level of dedication and commitment I see from our volunteers. It makes me proud to be a part of an organization that attracts such incredible, generous people.

2. Our supporters

In my first holiday season at Wood’s, I’ve had the opportunity to witness the kindness of those who support our clients and their families by donating to our annual Santa Project. This year, 135+ Wood’s Homes families were adopted by generous Calgarians looking to share a little comfort and joy during the holiday season. It was humbling to see that, despite the current economic climate in Calgary, the number of Santa Project supporters increased this year, as it has every year since its inception.

3. Our culture

Whether it’s a birthday, work anniversary or another important event, our staff never let an important milestone pass without recognition. At Wood’s Homes, accomplishments are celebrated and good work never seems to go unnoticed. Evidence of this comes in the form of our annual Service Recognition event, where staff members are recognized for their contribution to the organization throughout the year.

Our culture of teamwork and appreciation was also readily apparent just this past week when our entire Parkdale Campus Admin Building team held a potluck and worked together to festively decorate the office for the holiday season.

It’s an old adage, but one that rings very true for me and the work that I do at Wood’s Homes; “It’s not work if you love what you do.”
